I don't think the people in Hollywood understand techno yet. I'm all for
high-energy techno, but the techno I've heard on movie soundtracks is
usually pretty sucky and risk-free - they're afriad to aleinate the audience
by playing something too strange. A real pity, because some of the more
enjoyable sci-fi blockbusters (like the Matrix) would have been an ideal
context in which to present music that didn't sound like a Yet Another
Composing Gig for some Hollywood pro. One problem of course is that the
music is usually viewed as another just merchandising spin-off - film
soundtracks used to be more important in the days before everyone had a
video recorder.
Another problem is that if the film is using original music (rather than
licensing some cool old retro track for instant mood), then they want it to
be very subordinate to the visuals, lest they be accused of sinking millions
of dollars into a 2-hour music video. Ah well
The IDM-est science fiction film is of course 'Pi' because Autechre are on
the soundtrack :-)
